Ollies Point & Witch's Rock Boat Trip

The Surf

For Witches and Ollie's, as well as other S-SW swell magnets like Playa Grande and Playa Negra, the best months historically are March, April, May, June, July, August, and November.

December, January and February often have a lack of swell consistency from the Southern Hemisphere, however they could be ideal for beginners and longboarders (at least worth an effort if you're not expecting overhead barrels). Witches and Ollies face south and don't actually work on NW swells even though some breaks around Tamarindo and further down the Nicoya peninsula do (a bit confusing- a lot of surfers go there in the wrong season and get skunked).

For the Nicoya Peninsula the best overall months are November to April, and July. This time of the year features stable weather conditions and predominant offshore winds. The Nicoya Peninsula is the area most exposed to North Pacific (WNW) ground swells which are at their statistical peak from December-February. November, March, and April also feature plenty of Southern hemisphere swell which in combo with dominant offshore winds during this period is a recipe for perfection. Note: Southern hemisphere swells (SW or S) are almost always substantially stronger than Northern hemisphere swells (WNW). May-October is the "rainy season" when the Nicoya Peninsula often has unstable weather (more so than Guanacaste and Nicaragua which are comparatively drier), and given the lack of protected anchorages or harbors here, not an ideal place for a boat at this time of year, though July is often a mini-dry season with excellent weather.
